Reverend Francis M. Craft (Mohawk) and the American Sisters of Mercy: Mother Mary Anthony Cloud Robe (Susie Bordeaux)(Brulé), Sr. Mary Joseph (Josephine Two Bears) (Hunkpapa), Sr. Mary Gregory or Gertrude (Ellen Clark)(Hunkpapa), and Sr. Mary Bridget (Annie Pleets)(Hunkpapa), at U.S. Military Hospital, Havana, Cuba: Rev. Craft and the sisters were inspired by Sacred White Buffalo Woman of the Lakota-Sioux tradition and St. Kateri Tekakwitha (Algonquin-Mohawk). The sisters became the first American Indian women to officially enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces. During the Spanish American War they administered this hospital while Rev. Craft served as its chaplain.
